THE KEYS
Wisdom for the Journey from Mama Keys
Edition Title: "She Carried Us All"

My Darlings,

Mama had to sit down for a minute with a hot cup of tea and let the Spirit move through her before writing you today. See, everywhere I look — on the news, in the neighborhood, even in some of our own households — I see women carrying the weight of the world while being told they’re “too much” or “not enough” all at the same time. And baby, Mama’s here to say: It’s time we honor what’s always been holding this world together — HER.

Let me tell you a little story…

When I was a young girl, my own mama worked two jobs and still found time to sew dresses for the neighborhood girls whose mamas couldn’t afford Easter Sunday clothes. We didn’t have much, but we had each other. She taught me to give, to lead, to love hard — and to expect nothing in return. I didn’t know it then, but she was laying bricks. Quietly building the road I now walk as Mama Keys.

Years later, I worked in a hospital where I was the only Black Registered Nurse on staff in my department. And yet, I was the one training the new hires. I was the one staying late when the babies needed extra care, and you know what they called me? “Sweetheart,” like I was just there to smile and fetch coffee. But baby, I was saving lives.

Women have always done more than we’ve been given credit for — in boardrooms, classrooms, kitchens, and voting booths. We’ve carried water, carried babies, carried dreams, and carried nations. And still, too often, our names are left out the storybooks.

Well, not on my watch.

We are living in a time where women’s voices must not only be heard — they must be backed, funded, elevated, and protected. When a woman starts a business, don’t ask her who’s watching the kids. Ask her how you can invest. When a woman runs for office, don’t critique her tone. Listen to her vision. And when a woman stands up and says, “I’ve got an idea,” don’t dismiss it — amplify it.

You hear me?

We are not in a moment of change. We are in a movement of recognition. From the mama braiding her daughter’s hair before school while building her own online boutique, to the elder women leading food drives in their churches — these are the architects of our future.

So I’m asking you, my dear readers — what woman can you affirm today? Whose name can you speak in a room full of opportunity? What woman-led endeavor can you donate to, share, or simply show up for?

Because when women rise, we all rise.

And I’ll tell you one more thing before I close — every key you’ll ever need to unlock your next level of purpose… some woman passed it down to you. Just think baby, she may have whispered it in a prayer or wrote it in her journal or just survived long enough for you to see what the key to resilience looks like, because that is the key…keeping the faith and never losing hope.

Now it’s your turn to use those keys wisely.

With all the love my heart can hold,
Mama Keys
